Soulful Joy

Reading Luke 1- 2

Mary observes something extraordinary about God: He is about to alter the course of all human history. Therefore, she said.

“My soul is filled with joy as I praise the Lord, and my spirit dances with happiness in God, my Savior.  He has looked kindly upon my humble life, and now, all generations will see me as blessed. The Mighty One has done amazing things for me, and His name is truly special. He shares His mercy with everyone who respects Him, from generation to generation. He has shown His strength and power; He has brought down the proud in their own thoughts, lifted up those who are humble, and filled the hungry with good things while sending the rich away empty-handed. He has helped His servant, Israel,  and remembered His mercy, just as He promised our ancestors,  to Abraham and his family forever.”  (Adapted from Luke 1:46–55)

Isn’t it amazing how God chooses to connect with two humble women—one old and barren, Elizabeth, and the other young and virgin, Mary? Mary is so touched by this beautiful vision of God, who cares for the lowly, that she can’t help but sing out in joy—this song is known as “the Magnificat.”

Mary and Elizabeth are genuinely inspiring figures in Luke’s story. He admires their faith, but what stands out is their humble and joyful acceptance of God’s plans. Luke wants to share this wonderful message with Theophilus and all of us: it’s about embracing God’s greatness with a cheerful heart, just like Elizabeth and Mary did!

Elizabeth joyfully asks in Luke 1:43, “Why have I been so blessed that the mother of my Lord would visit me?” At the same time, Mary reflects in Luke 1:48, “He has noticed my humble state as His servant.”

It’s wonderful to see that the people who can truly magnify the Lord are those like Elizabeth and Mary. They understand their humble beginnings and are filled with awe at the loving-kindness of our magnificent God!

If you’re longing this Advent season for something more meaningful—something the world can’t provide—think of it as a wonderful gift from God. It’s a chance to encounter Christ as your true source of comfort and redemption.

First, try to let go of seeking praise from others. Remember what John 5:44 says: “How can you believe when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from God?” Focusing on God’s validation can genuinely open your heart.

Next, recognize that money and material things won’t fulfill your deeper needs. In Luke 16:14, we see how the Pharisees let their love for money cloud their understanding. Absolute satisfaction comes from something much more important.

Alongside this, nurture a desire for the genuine consolation and redemption that only God can offer—things the world simply can’t give you.

Lastly, ask God for a revelation. Pray for your heart to be opened so you can joyfully say, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God, the comfort of my past, and the redemption of my future. Now I see you and receive you for who you are.”

I hope you find these steps uplifting this Advent Season! May your journey be filled with joy and inspiration, not only for you but also for those around you.
