Ought not this woman be informed and inspired?
Why Bible Study? Because a woman informed is a woman inspired!
‘All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God (or Woman of Worth) may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.’
II Timothy 3:16-17
Personal Bible Study brings us closer to God. It informs our living and reveals the pathways to repentance, renewal, and restoration. To get the most out of your daily study of God’s word, follow these steps.
1. Pray!
Take a moment to pray to God and ask for his help understanding the scriptures. Your prayer may sound like this:
God, thank you for giving us your word. Open my mind and heart to receive knowledge from the scriptures I’m studying today. Let your Holy Spirit guide me to a proper understanding of your word for my life, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
2. Read Correctly.
Don’t rush! Take your time to read the words and verses correctly. Underline or highlight any words you don’t understand and look up their definitions. Doing this will bring clarity to the scriptures you’re studying.
Additionally, try to find out if the passage you’re reading is a narrative, first person account, historical record, or poetry.
3. Read in Context.
The Bible tells us God’s story from creation to eternity. With such a vast story, it can be confusing if we don’t know where or when the scripture we’re reading fits into the story.
Take time and answer the questions “who, what, where, when, why, and how” to help you put the scriptures in the proper context. This will help you understand what the scriptures meant to the writers and what it can mean for your life today.
4. Read for Inspiration.
Now that you have prayed, read correctly, and put the scriptures in the proper context, it’s time to find out how the scriptures can inspire you. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Are there principles for me to live by?
- Are there promises for me to claim?
- Are there practices for me to perform?
Refer to these steps each time you study the Bible and watch your faith grow!
