Why Jesus Came -Advent 2024
Ladies! I want to share something meaningful during this Advent season. Have you ever noticed how closely Jesus’s birth connects to His crucifixion? Hebrews 2:14-15 beautifully expresses this:
“Since, therefore, the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death—that is, the devil—and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.” (ESV)
These verses remind us why Jesus came: to die for our sins. It’s a hopeful message to share with friends and family, especially those who may not believe.
When we see “children” in this context, it refers to all of us who believe in Jesus (John 1:12). God sent Jesus on a mission to save His children because “God so loved the world that he gave [Jesus]” (John 3:16). You can welcome Christ into your life and receive this amazing gift of being adopted as His child.
Jesus took on human form to die for us. By doing so, He destroyed the devil’s power over sin, meaning Satan can no longer accuse us! Through Jesus’s sacrifice, we are justified (Romans 5:9).
We are also free from the fear of death! Knowing we have eternal life takes away our fears and struggles.Since we don’t have to fear death—our greatest enemy—then we don’t have to fear anything else either! Like Mary and Elizabeth of the Bible, we can be truly free to experience joy and share that joy with others.
Mary’s role was pivotal to the first Advent. God promised that a woman would bear a Son, and she wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger (Genesis 3:15; Luke 2:7).
Mary was a willing believer, demonstrating remarkable courage under Jewish law, as highlighted by Biblical history. As Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “Courage is not the absence of fear but the assessment that something else is more important.” When Mary accepted God’s invitation to bear His Son, who was sent to be our Savior, she truly grasped this distinction (Luke 1:26-38).
Mary’s role in Advent exemplifies God’s incredible choice. Let women everywhere be willing to accept God’s invitation to glorify Him through serving others, always remembering that we are God’s chosen servants, even in difficult times.
