My Mother’s Principle is “When people need help, they just need help.”
People Helping is Everybody’s Business
And we urge you, brothers, to admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, and be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances; this is God’s will in Christ Jesus for you.
I Thessalonians 5:14-18
During a difficult time in my life, a friend reached out to me and suggested that we go shoe shopping together. This gesture meant so much to me, as it showed that she was there for me and willing to support me through my struggles. In fact, her actions perfectly embodied the qualities of a competent Christian counselor, Her attitude was compassionate and genuine, and she never once judged or criticized me. Despite not being a professional counselor, she was incredibly impactful and helpful in my time of need, and I will always be grateful for her kindness.
The “Core skills” of effective Christian Counseling are based on biblical teachings as outlined in First Thessalonians 5: 14 -18 and provide a decisive mandate for all Christian counselors. The terms used in this passage encompass various behaviors and actions that counseling can employ. For example, the word “urge” can mean comforting, encouraging, beseeching, or admonishing, while “warning” can involve understanding, empathy, and even judgment. The ultimate goal of Christian counseling is to restore the image of God in humanity and promote maturity in Christ. As someone who feels called to help others during their times of need, I believe that “people helping is everybody’s business.” Therefore, I am committed to providing support and comfort to those who are struggling; just as Jesus has loved me, I am confident that I can make a difference in the lives of those around me.
